Midea Heat pump fault P3

Compressor current protection

Heat pump

What it means

Protects the compressor from abnormally high currents. Triggered when compressor current rises above the model-specific Currentmax threshold.

Likely causes

  1. Compressor current exceeds Currentmax for the specific model
  2. Low ambient temperature (T4<3°C) combined with low water-side temperature triggers freeze protection
  3. Water side temperature dropping below critical thresholds due to low flow, low ambient temperature, or system stoppage
  4. Abnormal state detected requiring compressor protection
  5. Set temperature reached (normal stop)
  6. Damage to cables
  7. Excessive number of connections
  8. Terminals not made to original specification
  9. Damage to seals
  10. Incorrect fitting of glands
  11. Abnormal system state detected

Where to start

  1. Identify ODU model variant
  2. Measure actual compressor current and compare against corresponding Currentmax
  3. Measure compressor current draw

Safety: Isolate the outdoor unit and any backup heater, and give the inverter capacitors time to discharge before you open the electrics. Anything on the refrigerant circuit needs F-gas certification.
