Grant Boilerhouse fault 6

Fumes and puffing during starting (conventional flue)

Oil boiler

What it means

Fumes and puffing noises occur during burner start up on boilers with a conventional flue, indicating draught or air supply problems.

Likely causes

  1. Blocked chimney
  2. Chimney not high enough to produce required draught
  3. Inadequate air supply near the burner
  4. Kitchen fan drawing products out of the burner
  5. Debris, leaves, hair, fluff accumulation in air inlet cover and air damper
  6. Debris accumulation on fan impeller and fan housing
  7. Contamination in oil pump filter

Where to start

  1. Check the condition of the chimney, ensure it is not blocked and is high enough to produce the required draught
  2. Check that there is an adequate air supply near the burner
  3. Check that a kitchen fan is not drawing products out of the burner
